I encountered a client before and he pressured me in rankings that are impossible to achieve in 1 month.
Lesson learned: Make sure you tell them the time period of your link building strategy especially when it is for brand building that is for long term.

If you can be picky about your clients that would be a solution, but few SEO firms can do that. Another tip would be don’t outsource to India as unfortunately some SEOs do.

Nice post.

I guess being honest, confident and proactive are the best options you can offer to your clients. Many times is difficult for them to trust in you at the beginning because there’s a lot of cheaters out there.

We created a “good practices manual” especially for them, and we try to keep it up dated as soon as we can. Every up date we send an email and it’s working pretty well.

Good tips. I made a 10 page intro to SEO and what it is about just so my clients understand the basics. I spend a lot of energy on explaining my clients how important long term SEO is, and that is exactly what I focus on in the 10 pages intro. A good idea is to add them on Skype too, if they have any questions they can send them directly and get a quick answer.

I think to satisfy a client is to be honest and I needs a lot of endeavor to do that. SEO is a long term task and that is why both client and contractor need to have patient.

Educating Customers back fires a lot. Last time I did that mutual interested ended up with the “ghuy” scamming 3 grand from 3rd party corporation I was working with, they paid him and demanded money from me. step two he picked up some tips I was giving him and started to use them for evil, scamming money out of customers and my SEO advise helped him to scam more people. I still feel horrible about it

As for SEO in general I don’t believe that month-to-month rate is best way to go.
However, I think this article is well written and I enjoyed reading it

Great post Jeff. Making the clients understand each and every bit of seo, letting them know why it takes lot of time to get fruitful results and keeping them posted about what we are doing & its impacy at any point in time is very important. All these not only helps them realize the effort that is needed to lead them to long term success but also helps them to retain the trust in the vendor.

I can not explain how important it is to let your clients understand that organic rankings can take as long 8 – 18 months depending on their budget, competitors and other related factors.

I also agree one has to be honest from the start and rather tell them this is like an endurance race and the one that keeps on running and fighting will eventually win.

This is why CRO is so important. Cause at least you can show them improvement on current traffic, proving that it is worth while.

More conversions more profit whilst waiting to hit the more competitive keywords concerning organic rankings.

Send clients flowers or gifts when it is their birthday, also try to send a Christmas gift. Little extra things like this may not seem like much but believe me they do count.
